Sonya

2017

Sonya finished the coursework for her Master’s in accounting in 2014 but thus far has not defended her thesis. Christiane Toé hired her as a three-day-a-week assistant in January 2016, but she found a full-time job elsewhere in August in the private sector with a construction firm. She married an economics professor who teaches at a private institute. (Solidarité.)

2016

Sonya married Innocent at the end of 2015. He teaches economics at a private institute and together they have a comfortable home. In early 2016, our part time assistant Awa left us to take a full time job, and we hired Sonya three days a week to replace her. Since the job mainly consists of making out checks and keeping the books, her Master’s degree in accounting serves her well. She works under the direction of Christiane, a management consultant, who as a volunteer handles our affairs in Burkina Faso.

2015

Day20_27Sonya studied accounting/corporate management, taking her Master’s courses in the evening. She finished the coursework a year ago, including a four-month internship with CCVA (the state motor vehicle agency). She started another internship in December with the Centre de Gestion Agréé (CGA), but then took leave when she became pregnant. She’s had a fiancé a long time; she’s now living with him. The baby was born in April 2015, but died soon after of intestinal complications.

Her plan is to go back to CGA, do her thesis and then defend it.

2014

Sonya

Sonya will be our first graduate, with a Master’s Degree in Corporate Management from l’Ecole Supérieure de Commerce et d’Informatique de Gestion (l’ESCO-IGES) in Ouagadougou. We paid her tuition, books and lunch money for her fifth and final year of study.

In Burkina Faso, it is common for graduates to spend up to two years in internships before getting a real job. But Sonya has just gotten a position as an accountant. It’s not corporate management, but it is paying, and paying jobs are rare. She’s off to a fast start.
