Arzouma

2017

Arzouma is a first-year history major. Her parents split up when she was three and she was raised by her father’s aunt who works in the kitchen of a private secondary school. She will take a national competitive exam this year for a government scholarship to train as a teacher. (Solidarité/Catherine Yameogo)

2016

Arzouma’s parents separated when she was an infant. At the age of three, she was given by her father to his aunt, who didn’t have any children. She has always called the aunt “grandma”. She grew up happily in the house below.

When I interviewed her in January 2016 at her secondary school, Lycée Sainte Monique, she said that she loves history and she would like to teach it. When she applied to us for a grant, she said that after her degree in history, she would like to become an archeologist. Why not aim high?
